McConnell's Sherry Cask takes the Gold at the Irish Whiskey Awards

The 10th annual Irish Whiskey Awards in Dublin proved to be a night of triumph and celebration for McConnell's Sherry Cask, claiming the coveted category winner title for Blended Irish Whisky Age Statement. Held at the iconic Jameson Bow Street Distillery in Co. Dublin, the event honoured both emerging and established Irish whiskey producers and enthusiasts.

During a delightful drinks reception, at Bow Street in Dublin, the stage was set an evening filled with anticipation and excitement.

The meticulous judging process commenced earlier in August, orchestrated by Celtic Whiskey of Celtic Whiskey Shop Dawson Street. Blind tastings held at Dublin's Flowing Tide pub on Abbey Street were just a mere part of the extensive judging process. Extensive tastings across Ireland added depth and diversity to the selection process. Coordinated with the Irish Whiskey Society in Dublin and Dingle, Cork Whiskey Society, Waterford Whiskey Society, Kilkenny Whiskey Guild, Ennis Whiskey Club, 1875 Whiskey Club, Carlow Whiskey Society, Belfast Whiskey Club, and the Aviator’s Whiskey Society,

One standout from this prestigious event was McConnell’s Sherry Cask Finish, a whiskey meticulously aged for five years. It matures in first-fill select Bourbon barrels before finding its exceptional finish in the finest Oloroso Sherry Casks, infusing the spirit with rich aromas of dried figs, decadent dark chocolate, and lingering spice notes. Bottled at a robust 46% ABV, non-chill filtered.

Tasting the Excellence

Nose: Dried figs and currants lead the olfactory journey, followed by the inviting embrace of Christmas spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. Dark chocolate undertones and a subtle hint of fresh leather add depth and complexity.

Palate: A symphony of flavours unfolds—Demerara sugar intertwines with dark ripe cherries and black raspberry. Bitter dark chocolate shavings interplay with the richness of red apples, creating an unforgettable tasting experience.

Finish: The finale leaves a lasting impression with lingering oak notes, a delicate touch of leather, and a whisper of subtle clove spice, inviting you to savour every moment.

The 2023 Irish Whiskey Awards not only honoured exemplary spirits but also showcased the innovation and craftsmanship defining the landscape of Irish whiskey. McConnell's Sherry Cask finish stood as a testament to this, an embodiment of tradition and ingenuity, leaving an indelible mark on the discerning palates of whiskey connoisseurs.
