Belfast Distillery opens doors in former prison

Updated: Apr 23

At the heart of Belfast, a historic gem has undergone its transformation into a haven for whiskey enthusiasts and curious visitors alike. Crumlin Road Gaol, a former prison steeped in rich history dating back to the mid-1800s, has become the home of McConnell’s Distillery and Visitor Experience.

This venture has been backed by their dedicated shareholders with a vision to restore not only a legendary whisky but also an iconic building.

The journey to bring this vision to life was no small feat. With a fully operational distillery and immersive visitor experience within the confines of this listed building, meticulous care and consideration are paramount.

The endeavour sees the distillery extend over three floors, boasting 1,000 sq. m. of distilling floor space and 1,700 sq. m. dedicated to the visitor experience.

The distillery has the capacity to produce 500,000 litres of pure alcohol annually, contributing to the local economy and restoring the legend of the famous J&J McConnell's Whisky.

McConnell’s Distillery and Visitor Experience is poised to become one of Belfast's premier tourist destinations, complementing the city's renowned hospitality scene and breathing new life into established landmarks.

Visitors to the distillery can anticipate an array of immersive experiences. From whisky tours and premium tastings to witnessing a working distillery in the heart of Belfast, every corner will offer a glimpse into the artistry and craftsmanship behind McConnell’s Irish Whisky.

Whether you're a whisky enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking an unforgettable experience, McConnell’s Distillery and Visitor Experience promises something truly special.

The McConnell's team will be visiting Cape Town in May and will share some exciting news for the South African fans shortly. Cheers to history in the making!
